passionate about prevention

If you know me at all, you’ll know I passionately believe that we can massively impact our health by making dietary and other lifestyle changes. I could rant on about the devastating effects of long term poor dietary choices eg sugary margariney white cakes and biscuits, lack of fresh vegetables, ready meals. And then the quick solutions that GPs often give, a pill for indigestion, a pill for high blood pressure, a pill for depression which fills the coffers of the big harmaceutical industry, and does not address the causes…oh dear I AM having a rant after all!

Today I am delighted and excited to have been included, with my Nutritionist hat on, in a Daily Mirror article – 13 top tips to prevent breast cancer. And thank you Janey Lee Grace, without your expert media “Prepare to Shine” coaching none of this would be possible.

3 tips from me:

1. sprinkle 2-4 tbs freshly ground linseed, daily, on your cereal, soup or smoothie (see article ‪in Daily Mirror)

2. make sure you regularly include brassica vegetables ie broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts – and great that we are coming up to the brussels ‘time of year’. broccoli

Brassica contain sulforaphane, a chemical that stimulates the body’s natural ability to fight cancer, by preventing cancer cell growth and increasing the rate at which cancer cells commit suicide (apoptosis). It has been found that 3-day old broccoli sprouts contain up to 100 times more sulforaphane than that found in mature broccoli. The good news is you can now buy powdered and dried broccoli sprouts. This powder could even be considered an anticancer superfood! Brassicas are also rich in di-indolylmethane (DIM), which mops up excess oestrogens (excess oestrogen stimulates breast cells to multiply) and has other anticancer properties too. So all in all make broccoli and its relatives one of your best friends. Finally other liver friendly foods include rocket, watercress and garlic.

3. get moving, any form of exercise that gets you out of the computer chair and makes you happy. I love to dance Nia as you know and often take a 5 minute dance break, or walk the dog for 45 minutes. Inka Ebo from Breakthrough Breast Cancer says “Just 30 minutes of daily physical activity could reduce the number of breast cancer cases by at least 20%” Being overweight increases your risk of breast cancer. Think of exercise like brushing your teeth, there is no question, you just do it!
